The smell of freshly cooked daily basmati rice is often unparalleled. When you peek inside your best grain storage area and find it has lost its signature smell (a sign that the rice may be old) or, worse, discover insects in your storage area, this can be incredibly frustrating.
At Kuber Agro, we are proud of being the producers of Oscar Basmati Rice and wish you the same quality smell of your basmati rice when enjoying it at home as we do when producing Oscar Rice at our facilities. In this blog post, you will learn about some great tips for keeping your daily basmati rice smelling good and fresh tasting for many months.
Why Proper Storage of Daily Basmati Rice is So Important?
When properly storing daily basmati rice, it is important not only for eliminating pests but also for preserving the flavor and aroma of the rice (due to the delicate nature of the oils present in basmati rice). Research indicates that rice can deteriorate up to 40% in quality and lose its aroma in a few months due to improper storage. Refusing to cook with inferior grains is a smart move, but these few good practices help ensure that you’re eating the best meal every time.
After opening, remove the bag it came in; if it is a plastic bag you are using, place it into a clean container/silicon lid. Recommended containers are PET (heavy-duty plastic) or metal (stainless steel).
Place in a rice container a few dried bay leaves, cloves, or a stick of cinnamon. The rice weevils are not affected by the presence of these common items in your kitchen, but they do make them stay away without spoiling the taste of your rice.
Keep your container in a cool place in your pantry or a cupboard, out of direct sunlight, the stove, or the sink. The two most dangerous factors for fresh rice are the variation in temperature and humidity.
To make life easier for the self-sufficient, we’ve made a list of the best ways to store rice.
| Storage Option | Best For | Risk |
| Glass Jars | Long-term freshness & visibility | Heavy and breakable |
| Stainless Steel | Maximum pest protection & durability | Cannot see inside |
| Airtight Plastic | Daily convenience & lightweight | Can scratch easily over time |
Oscar Basmati Rice Tip: If you purchase your daily Basmati rice in bulk, put the rice in airtight bags and freeze it for 48 hours prior to storing it in the pantry. This is a natural solution that will kill any micro-pest eggs on its own.
You don’t need fancy gadgets to make your daily portion of aromatic and delicious basmati rice, just a few clever kitchen tips. Select the proper container and store it properly, and each meal served with daily Basmati rice will be a fragrant success.
Daily basmati rice can keep fresh and fragrant for 12–24 months when stored in an airtight container in a cool dark place.
