Diwali is a ritual that guides us from Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya (leading us deeper from darkness into light). It is also a ritual cleansing, guiding us to let go of our weights and hit the switch from stagnation to a “fresh start.”
The whole Diwali festival takes five days, between Dhanteras and Bhaiya Dooj. Specifically, Dhanteras is the auspicious beginning, during which we pay tribute to Goddess Laxmi and Lord Kuber, which is usually done by acquiring new utensils or gold to represent the new flow of prosperity and wealth. This cycle of poojas (worship rituals) is meant to attract inner peace and purify our homes and our lives. The nature of the festival is that we are bringing Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesh by lighting two lamps in order to celebrate the coming back of Ram and his release out of darkness.
